FOR THE LOVE OF WHITE
Bukola Bakare
Wearing white is a great way to look chic and classy. If you plan to wear white and be the centre of attention, these suggestions will come in handy
Confidence is key
Don’t be afraid to experiment with white and know how to wear it for some occasions. From casual to fancy, there’s always a look for you.
Always wear flesh-coloured undergarments
Years ago, the rule was to wear white under white. Not anymore. Since white bra, panty, and camisole lines tend to show through, your undergarments will be less obtrusive in flesh tones. To create a clean and seamless look, wear pieces that closely match your natural skin tone.
Be careful where you put your white
According to www.lifetoolsforwomen, since white reflects light and makes things appear larger, don’t wear solid white on your largest body parts, like your chest, hips, or thighs, because it will make those areas look bigger. Instead, opt for white monochromatic (all one colour) ensembles, which elongate, or wear white on a small body part, or use white to accentuate a part of your body.
Go all out
If in doubt, just wear white from head to toe as no colour is more fresh. If you struggle with how to style things, white on white is such a high impact look.
Go for gold
A real match is gold and white together. Try to avoid silver because it kind of makes the whole outfit look cheap. A white pair of jeans with a white blouse and a gold statement belt will do the trick.
Think twice about wearing white shoes
Since white shoes make your feet look bigger and can also visually make you look shorter, they may not be the best choice. Look for shoe styles that elongate, or steer clear of white shoes entirely and opt for flesh-coloured shoes instead.
Try different textures
Want to make this monochromatic look anything but boring? Mix and match textures. Mix white jeans with a tank top and knit kimono for an all-white take on casual wear. The varying fabrics add style while keeping with the sophistication of the monochromatic look.
Match your whites
Believe it or not, there is more than one shade of white: ivory and many more tones, but they don’t always complement each other. Whenever you’re rocking a monochromatic ensemble, keep the tones in mind. You can mix shades but let your eyes be the deciding factor. Before walking out, stare at your outfit in various lighting (bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and outdoors to name a few). Do the shades work together or does one white look so bright that it makes the other almost look dirty? Be mindful of how your whites work together.
Break it up with accessories
Accessories make or break an outfit. Let your white attire be the backdrop while you create art with accessories. Add a statement necklace to create a sexy look or try dainty pieces for an understated look that lets you be the focal point.
Don’t wear white to a wedding
Unless you’re the bride or in the bridal train, don’t wear all-white to a wedding. While a white blouse worn under a different-coloured garment is acceptable, (like a pastel suit, for example), the tradition still holds firm: white is reserved for the bridal party. Don’t try to compete with the bride on her big day. If you don’t like the way white looks on you or if white just isn’t your colour, try an off-white shade instead, like ivory, eggshell, or oyster. Pure white looks good on only a fraction of the population, so you are not alone. Try another light shade instead.
